2011 Ride - 3rd Annual Motorcycle Ride For Dad a Great Success!
The organizing committee of the Manitoba Motorcycle Ride For Dad wishes to thank all the wonderful sponsors, volunteers and especially THE RIDERS who have helped to make the 2011 Ride for Dad a huge success. On Ride Day, 497 riders brought in an amazing $95,000 in donations for prostate cancer research and awareness in Manitoba.
Without you, our generous and dedicated supporters, none of this would be possible.
But…the fight against this dreaded disease must go on! Remember that early detection is the best cure so men over 40 need to talk to their doctors about getting it checked!
We hope you will join us again for this year's ride as we continue to raise funds and awareness to fight prostate cancer!
THANK YOU!

THE SUN SHINES ON MANITOBA
MOTORCYCLE RIDE FOR DAD
WINNIPEG, MB (May 28, 2011): Today, starting at Polo Park Shopping Centre and under much welcomed sunny skies, close to 500 motorcycle riders took to the streets in support of the Manitoba Motorcycle Ride for Dad – fighting prostate cancer.
The sight of shining chrome and leather, and the roar of thunder was unforgettable as the riders rode west in a police escorted parade down Portage Avenue, then headed out on the highway all the way to Gimli and back. The Ride for Dad culminates today with a huge wind-up event at Cowboys, Canad Inns Windsor Park, at 3:30 P.M.
Joining Celebrity Ride Captains Shelly Glover, MP for St. Boniface and Doug Brown of Winnipeg Blue Bomber fame in the Motorcycle Ride for Dad official start today were; Justin Swandel, Deputy Mayor, City of Winnipeg; Keith McCaskill, Chief of Police, City of Winnipeg; Mike Sutherland, President, Winnipeg Police Association; Wally Schmeichel, Regional General Manager, TELUS; Carolin Taubensee, Marketing Director, Manitoba Lotteries; Moe Sabourin and Kirk Van Alstyne, Co-chairs, Manitoba Motorcycle Ride for Dad; and a number of Media Easy Riders and sponsor representatives. The special guest MC for the event was popular TV host, Jim Ingebrigtsen.
Event spokesperson and prostate cancer survivor, Ed Johner, said that today’s Motorcycle Ride for Dad set a new record for number of riders. “The number of registered riders this year is 497 and that’s our all time high,” said Johner. “The awareness we have raised for early detection of prostate cancer is very gratifying,” he added. “I was lucky, my cancer was discovered by my doctor during a routine check-up. Now more and more men and their families are becoming aware of the need for early diagnosis. And all it takes is a simple PSA test.”
Currently, more than 1.2 million men in Canada have prostate cancer and 960,000 of them don’t know it yet.
The Manitoba Motorcycle Ride for Dad is made possible by the support from TELUS, National Presenting Sponsor; Manitoba Lotteries, Regional Presenting Sponsor; the Winnipeg Police Service; Winnipeg Police Association; RCMP; Winnipeg Fire & Paramedic Service; and valued sponsors, motorcycle clubs, donors and volunteers.
“Today, we raised over $95,000 to fight prostate cancer,” said Johner. “All funds stay in Manitoba for prostate cancer research and education. A heartfelt thanks to all the riders, donors, sponsors and volunteers who are so generous and provide us with the opportunity to participate in such a great event.”
