2013 Kick-off
April 19, 2013: More than 1.2 million men in Canada have prostate cancer and 80 per cent of them don’t know it. Today, the Manitoba Motorcycle Ride for Dad launched its 5th annual fundraising and awareness campaign. Hundreds of motorcycle enthusiasts will head out on the highway, Saturday, May 25, 2013, in support of prostate cancer research and education. The Manitoba Motorcycle Ride for Dad has raised over $360,000 in the past four years.
Motorcycle Ride for Dad is a Canada-wide fundraiser bringing together motorcycle enthusiasts, cancer survivors, community leaders and local police services. The 2012 Manitoba Motorcycle Ride for Dad set a record with 837 registered riders helping to raise over $116,000 to fight prostate cancer.
Ed Johner, prostate cancer survivor and Motorcycle Ride for Dad spokesperson, says that a simple three-minute test can save your life. “I wouldn’t be here today if I had avoided being tested,” said Johner. “That’s our message to men and their families – the best way to fight prostate cancer is with early diagnosis.”
2013 Celebrity Ride Captains are Doug Brown, Winnipeg Blue Bomber Hall of Famer; Shelly Glover, MP for St. Boniface; and Charlie Huddy, former Edmonton Oiler and Assistant Coach, Winnipeg Jets. The regional presenting sponsor is Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries.
The Motorcycle Ride for Dad is spearheaded by the Winnipeg Police Association and the organizing committee is led by police officers Kirk Van Alstyne and Moe Sabourin. Registered riders, donors, volunteers, and sponsors come from all over Manitoba.
“Our goals are to spread awareness of the need for early detection of prostate cancer and to increase the number of registered riders, pledge donors and funds raised each year,” said Johner. “All funds stay in Manitoba for prostate cancer research and education.”
Today, at a campaign launch event at McPhillips Station Casino, proceeds from the 2012 Manitoba Motorcycle Ride for Dad were presented to Dr. Sabine Mai, Director, Manitoba Institute of Cell Biology and Brian Sprott, Chair, Manitoba Prostate Cancer Support Group. Special guests included Dave Gaudreau, MLA, St. Norbert; Brian Mayes, City Councillor, St. Vital; Keith Walker, Superintendent, Winnipeg Police Service; Mike Sutherland, President, Winnipeg Police Association; Shahin Mehdizadeh, Superintendent, RCMP; and Dave Zubricki, Director of Marketing, Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries.
