Motorcycle Ride for Dad will start their engines at new location

WINDSOR, ON - The Motorcycle Ride for Dad, which raises funds and awareness in the fight against prostate cancer, will see riders move to the WFCU Centre on Sunday, May 30, 2010 for the start of the Windsor event.

The Ride will depart from the WFCU Centre at 10am for a parade of motorcycles through Windsor before continuing on a poker tour through the county with stops at St. Clair College, Meadows by the Lake, the Rhine Danube Club, Billy’s Pub & Grill and ending at the Ciociaro Club.

The parade of bikes will head north from the WFCU Centre on Lauzon Road to Riverside Drive where they will turn west towards Ouellette Avenue. The riders will then head south towards their first stop at St. Clair College. “We are happy to return a portion of the parade route to Riverside Drive. Our first Ride in 2005 started on Riverside Drive and was favoured by participants. With the new start location, we were able to bring back that element to this year’s Ride” stated Frank Bauer, Ride Chairman.

Registration can be done online, during pre-registration on May 29 between 11am and 5pm at Rack N’ Roll or prior to the start of the event from 7am-9:30am at the WFCU Centre. Registration is free for participants who raise $100 or more in pledges, otherwise costs $25 per person.

In 2009, Motorcycle Ride for Dad Windsor achieved a record number of participants. With over 1,000 participants, Motorcycle Ride for Dad Windsor was able to present $69,000 to the Windsor & Essex County Cancer Centre Foundation to support local prostate cancer research.

“The funds raised are used at the Windsor Regional Cancer Centre for research, education and awareness,” states Nancy Gibbons, Administrator at the Windsor & Essex County Cancer Centre Foundation. “We encourage Windsor & Essex County to come out on May 30 to ride, check out the bikes and help raise awareness for the fight against prostate cancer.”

Of the estimated one million men with prostate cancer in Canada, only 20% of those cases have been diagnosed while the remaining 80% have not been detected. This silent killer affecting mostly men age 50 and over, will claim 4,400 Canadian men this year. While one in seven men will be diagnosed with the disease in Canada, many are still hesitant to discuss possible prostate problems openly, even with their doctor.

Through the Motorcycle Ride for Dad, the goal is to educate the community about prostate cancer and raise money that goes directly to prostate cancer research.

The Motorcycle Ride for Dad is Canada's biggest annual motorcycle event dedicated to fighting prostate cancer through research and awareness. The Motorcycle Ride for Dad began in Ottawa in 2000. Garry Janz, along with the support of the Ottawa Police Association, the Ottawa Regional Cancer Centre Foundation and a handful of volunteers, organized that first Ride. Since then, the Ride has been raising money for prostate cancer research and education. Men, women and children rally each year to support the Ride in staggering numbers. In 2010, 29 cities across Canada will participate with chapter rides.

BACKGROUND ON WINDSOR & ESSEX COUNTY CANCER CENTRE FOUNDATION

www.windsorcancerfoundation.org

The Windsor & Essex County Cancer Centre Foundation was founded in 1996 by a group of volunteers, some of them former patients of the Windsor Regional Cancer Centre. The Foundation is an independent and community-based registered charity. Funds are raised through personal and corporate donations, planned giving commitments, memorial donations, gifts of securities and through fundraising initiatives with our event partners. The Foundation acts as the “fundraising arm” of the Windsor Regional Cancer Centre and receives advice from their senior management team with regard to the current and future needs of the cancer program. 100% of the funds raised in Windsor and Essex County are used in this community to advance the mission of the Foundation: To reduce the impacts of cancer in our community.
